Biography

Baldwin has exhibited worldwide alongside Banksy,Antony Micallef,Jamie Hewlett,Peter Blake,Nick Walker & Vic reeves, amongst many others.

He graduated in Illustration/communication media in 1995 with commendation from Maidstone school of art, before this he was at Eastbourne college of art..(best student 1992)

He is based in West Sussex although born in Manchester.

His work deals with topics such as innocence, life-death, vanitas, love,politics,symbolism, beauty, innocence and decay-.Everything really that comes under the topic LIFE.

The collecting of 'real' elements has always been an important part of the layering process, and in the past we have seen Baldwin use real Iraq and U.S. currency,vintage crucifixes and real bullets , stag horns, guns and vintage war memorabilia in his work.Currently he is using razor blades .

The paintings are never planned, but take on an organic spontaneous journey.

This way of working is based more on feeling and a train of thought process.

Recently he has incorporated screenprinting alongside the layering of household paints and spraypaint.

He was selected as one of five artists on BBC2's THE APPRENTICE, (series 1, episode 5).

Named as one of the top 5 artists in the country by Sir Alan Sugar.

His work has featured in spaces worldwide including the FORSTER gallery,(London) Basel Art Fair,(switzerland),The ICA, the windows of Londons SELFRIDGES,Catto Contemporary, The Leonard St Gallery,Ink-D gallery, Lazinc Gallery,The New York Art Fair, London Art Fair,Gallerie Suty Paris,43 Molton St ,Opus(Newcastle),Tom Tom,Zoo art fair (Royal Academy), Pulse (Miami),Scope (New York )- Gen Art Miami,Bankrobber and more.

In 2006 Baldwin had two sell out solo shows.

In 2007, Baldwin had three sell out solo shows.

In 2008 Baldwin showed with Forster gallery London, producing one solo show DEAD INNOCENT, which came with his first published catalogue.He also showed at London art fair, Pulse,and donated three pieces to various worldwide charities.

Since 2001,he has donated to over twelve charity art events , supporting causes like the Red Cross,The Willow Foundation,Prostate Cancer,The Kennesaw Skate-park,Big issue,Ollie Bennett foundation,Rocking-horse appeal,Shelter and many others.

He has featured in publications Mens Health,The Quarterly,Flair (italy),AESTHETICA (aug/sep 08) VOGUE, (june 07),ELLE magazine, Time Out NYC,LIVING ETC,MODERN PAINTERS,THE OBSERVER STYLE MAGAZINE,DAZED & CONFUSED,I.D MAGAZINE,THEME,PURE,BELIO (2 EDITIONS),ELLE DECORATION ,Evening Standard, Plaza and ART OF ENGLAND to name just some.

Although primarily a painter, Baldwin produces ceramics,, and in the past has been commissioned to create bookcovers,& album covers for Overlook Publishers and Wall of Sound.

At Eastbourne college of art he was awarded best student in 1990, and in 1995 was awarded a commendation from Maidstone school of Art (KIAD) for excellence in communication media. .

In oct 08 Dan was asked to dress the windows of Londons coolest boutique, START,co owned by Brix Smith, ex guitar player and wife of Mark E Smith, the Manchester front man of legendary band The Fall.'Sugar and spliced and all things diced' featured two paintings, a neon work , dismembered childrens limbs scattered across an autumnal setting.

In 2007 Baldwin had three sell out shows in London, Newcastle and Brighton, as well as exhibitions in Basel Switzerland,Miami,Scope New York , London art fair and Zoo at the Royal Academy. .

His customised vespa bike was used in 2007 by Ben Sherman on their welcome home tour.

He was voted critics choice on the Saatchi gallery /your gallery website in sep 06 by ex-Art Review editor Rebecca Wilson -

Baldwin has never aimed to be from any 'urban' or 'street' background , having studied fine art/ illustration , although in 2008 was featured in Bonhams first 'urban' art auction - gaining a record price for a sale - APOCALYPSE WOW - THE END OF EVERYTHING fitted perfectly within the urban art setting with two huge canvasses comprising of burned US and UK flags, skulls and flowers. The piece sold for more than £25,000.

Baldwins last solo show DEAD INNOCENT launched on September 11th 2008 at FORSTER GALLERY, London, ending on Oct 23 2008 . .

Since then he has shown at Scope london ( oct 08) with forster gallery, in Gen Art Miami with Carmichael gallery L.A, and with Bankrobber gallery Notting Hill alongside Pete Doherty,Banksy and Billy Childish among others.

In Jan 09 he showed with forster gallery at London art fair.

In Feb 09 his work features alongside work by Gerald laing,Nick Walker ,D face and others in Artists 11,a prostate cancer charity auction held at Bonhams London.

In Sep 09 Baldwin is showing his first international solo show at Carmichael gallery Los Angeles, USA, and at the manchester art fair-

In-between then and now there is work going to Lancaster, to the newly refurbished Storey gallery,New York,Notting Hill and Philladelphia. .

in November Baldwin is showing at Signal gallery Hoxton in a group show.

In October 09 baldwins work is featured in a new film FREESTYLE out in 50 cinemas across UK.
